A group of runners and walkers shared reminiscences of Carl and Mary Specking at a post St. Patrick’s Day Parade Run tailgate. Carl was one time Vice President of the Saint Louis Track Club, Board member, and active member. He completed 17 marathons after beginning his running career at age 50. His favorite quote was “And when I run I feel His purpose,” (Newcomer St. Peters Obituary).
Carl and Mary are remembered for their kindness, humor, enthusiasm and camaraderie. One woman, as an example, reminisced that she had called Carl and Mary with some anxiety the night before she ran the Olympiad Marathon. The next day she found that Carl and Mary had arranged a relay of friends to escort her toward the finish from the 20-mile point! Carl’s son sported a shirt reading “Mary Specking, Badass Runner 4-ever” at the Saint Patrick’s Day Run tailgate
Carl, age 88, of St. Charles, Missouri passed away on January 22, 2019. His memorial service included visitation at Newcomer Cremation and Funeral Services, and military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Carl was preceded in death by his wife Mary (O’Toole) Specking in 2018. Mary was also an active Track Club member, and avid supporter of running and walking.
Carl was a member of the Galloping Gourmets, The St. Louis Track Club, Senior Olympics, Golden Games, and a Parkinson’s Disease support group. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He is survived by his children; Nancy Specking, Karen (Roger) Dye, Carol (Matt) Hemker, Carl (Jeanne Haley) Specking Jr., and Patty (Dan) Hastings; his grandchildren, Randy Dye, Cody Dye, Carl Specking III, Sarah Hastings, Nicole Hastings, Conor Fellin, and one great grandchild.
